HIT AND RUN-DUMP TRUCK DAMAGE.TIFF

GRAFTON — A 19 year-old Grafton man is looking for the dump truck driver who plowed into the back of his pickup truck Tuesday afternoon and fled. Jack Sommers was driving north on Interstate 43 just north of Highway 60, where the lanes go from two to one. He said he saw two cars brake abruptly in front of him and checked his mirror to see if it was safe to move into the left lane.

That is when he saw a dump truck braking so hard that smoke was coming from the brakes, Sommers said.

Then it suddenly plowed into the back of Sommers’ pickup truck. He said he doesn’t know if the dump truck was in the left or right lane when it hit, but Sommers first reaction was to see if he and his girlfriend were hurt.

When he established that they were OK, he pulled off to the side and looked for the dump truck.

He said he saw one off to the side of the road and thought it was the one that hit him, but it was a construction worker who told Sommers that the other had fled.

Ozaukee County Undersheriff Marshall Hermann confirmed that his department is investigating the hit and run.

"It appears that the striking vehicle (dump truck) stopped to assess its damage then left the scene," Hermann said. "We are still trying to identify the vehicle and driver."

Sommers said all he knows is that the dump truck was blue.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Sheriff’s Office at 262-377-7172.

Jack Sommers said he has insurance on his truck, but he doesn’t know what to do with his vehicle until he can identify the driver of the dump truck that hit him.
