WEST BEND — The West Bend East football team has canceled this Friday’s North Shore Conference game against Homestead, according to a statement from the athletic department.

"The safety of the student athletes involved in the East High School football program is our first priority," read the statement sent out to families of the team. "During the game on Friday, Sept. 13, the number of players with injuries reached a very concerning level. To prevent further injuries and provide time for some players to recover, we have made the difficult decision to cancel and forfeit the varsity game against Homestead High School scheduled for Friday, Sept. 20. To field a varsity team with such a low number of players would be unsafe for the remaining players."

The Suns’ JV2 football game at home this Thursday against Homestead will still take place as scheduled.

The Suns are 0-4 this season, having scored just six total points. They are coming off a 48-0 loss to Hartford last Friday. Mike Kozlowski is in his first year as head coach, replacing Jeff Rondorf after last season.

West Bend East has 37 players listed on its roster, but graduated 17 seniors from a team that reached the playoffs last fall and has just six seniors on this year’s squad.
